Malaysian Government Increases Electricity Bill Protection Threshold to 800 kWh Through 2026
The Malaysian government has announced an expansion of electricity bill protection for domestic users, raising the monthly usage threshold from 600 kWh to 800 kWh. Effective from September through December 31, 2026, this initiative is designed to provide significant financial relief to households regarding their utility expenses.
Under the expanded policy, domestic consumers falling within the new 800 kWh limit will be exempt from additional fuel adjustments, retail charges, and Sales and Service Tax (SST). This adjustment is expected to provide substantial relief to a broader segment of the population, with eligible users potentially saving up to RM47 per month on their electricity bills.
The decision to widen the protection threshold serves as a strategic measure to mitigate the impact of energy costs on the public during the final months of 2026.
