Malaysia Increases Electricity Bill Protection Threshold to 800 kWh Through December 2026
The government has announced an expansion of the electricity bill protection scheme for domestic users, raising the monthly threshold from 600 kWh to 800 kWh. This measure is scheduled to take effect from September through December 31, 2026, aiming to alleviate the cost of living for households across the country.
Under this expanded protection, qualifying domestic consumers will be exempt from certain additional costs, including retail charges and Service Tax (SST), for electricity consumption within the new 800 kWh limit. By shielding users from these specific surcharges, the initiative is expected to provide significant financial relief, with potential monthly savings of up to RM47 per household.
This policy adjustment serves as a strategic buffer against fluctuating utility costs during the final months of 2026. For the increasing number of electric vehicle (EV) owners, such measures are particularly noteworthy, as they contribute to more predictable and affordable domestic energy consumption for home charging requirements.
