Malaysia Expands Electricity Bill Protection Threshold to 800 kWh Through Year-End 2026
The government has announced an expansion of electricity bill protections for domestic consumers, increasing the monthly threshold from 600 kWh to 800 kWh. This measure is scheduled to take effect from September through December 31, 2026, providing targeted financial relief to a broader segment of households.
Under this expanded scheme, eligible domestic users will benefit from the exemption of several cost components, including the Imbalance Cost Pass-Through (AFA), retail charges, and Sales and Service Tax (SST). By raising the threshold, the government aims to shield more families from the volatility of energy pricing. For qualifying households, these combined exemptions are expected to result in significant monthly savings of up to RM47.
This initiative reflects a continued effort to mitigate the rising cost of living for Malaysian citizens during the final months of 2026. By widening the eligibility criteria, the policy provides a more substantial buffer for middle-income domestic users managing their utility expenditures. The move underscores a strategic approach to maintaining household affordability amidst evolving economic conditions.
