Government Expands Electricity Bill Protection to 800 kWh Through End of 2026

The Malaysian government has announced an expansion of its electricity bill protection scheme for domestic consumers, raising the monthly usage threshold from 600 kWh to 800 kWh. This initiative, effective from September through December 31, 2026, aims to provide significant cost relief to households across the country.

Under the revised policy, domestic users consuming up to 800 kWh per month will be exempt from the Imbalance Cost Pass-Through (ICPT) mechanism, retail charges, and Sales and Service Tax (SST). This adjustment is designed to shield a broader demographic of households from potential fluctuations in energy costs during the final quarter of 2026. By increasing the previous 600 kWh limit, the government intends to provide a wider safety net for domestic energy consumption.

The relief is expected to yield meaningful savings, with eligible users potentially reducing their monthly electricity expenditure by as much as RM47. This strategic measure serves as a buffer against the rising cost of living, providing financial stability for household budgets during the year-end period. Consumers are advised to monitor their energy usage to ensure they remain within the new 800 kWh threshold to maximize these benefits.
