Government Expands Electricity Bill Protection to 800 kWh for Late 2026

The Malaysian government has announced an increase in the electricity bill protection threshold for domestic consumers, raising the limit from 600 kWh to 800 kWh per month. This relief program will apply to usage recorded from September through December 31, 2026. The move is intended to provide significant financial relief to households during the final quarter of the year.

Under the expanded policy, domestic users within the new 800 kWh threshold will benefit from the exemption of the Imbalance Cost Pass-Through (ICPT) mechanism, retail charges, and Sales and Service Tax (SST). By raising the cap, the government aims to broaden the scope of eligible households, shielding a larger segment of the population from the volatility of energy costs. This adjustment is specifically designed to protect essential household consumption from rising utility expenses.

Eligible consumers are projected to see monthly savings of up to RM47. This temporary measure serves as a strategic buffer against the rising cost of living, providing much-needed stability for household budgets as the year concludes. The initiative reflects a continued effort to manage domestic energy affordability amidst fluctuating global and local economic conditions.
