Government Expands Electricity Bill Protection Threshold to 800 kWh Through 2026
The government has announced an expansion of electricity bill protection for domestic consumers, raising the monthly threshold from 600 kWh to 800 kWh. This measure, effective from September through December 31, 2026, is designed to provide significant financial relief to a broader range of households.
Under the new policy, domestic users consuming up to 800 kWh per month will benefit from the removal of certain costs, including the retail charge and Sales and Service Tax (SST). These changes, which also eliminate specific additional adjustment charges, are projected to save consumers up to RM47 per month. By increasing the consumption limit, the government ensures that a larger segment of the population can access these protections without being disqualified by moderate increases in energy usage.
This initiative serves as a targeted effort to mitigate the rising cost of living by providing a financial buffer for the residential sector. By extending the protection period until the end of 2026, the government is offering long-term predictability for household utility budgeting. The move is expected to provide much-needed economic breathing room for families as they navigate fluctuating energy costs over the coming years.
