Government Expands Electricity Bill Protection Threshold to 800 kWh for Late 2026
The Malaysian government has announced an expansion of electricity bill protection for domestic consumers, raising the monthly threshold from 600 kWh to 800 kWh. This measure will take effect from September through December 31, 2026, aiming to provide greater financial relief to households.
Under the expanded scheme, domestic users within the new 800 kWh limit will be exempt from various surcharges, including the Imbalance Cost Pass-Through (ICPT) mechanism, retail charges, and Sales and Service Tax (SST). By increasing the ceiling, the government aims to shield a broader segment of the population from fluctuating energy costs and additional service fees during the final quarter of 2026.
This policy adjustment is expected to provide significant monthly relief, with eligible households potentially saving up to RM47 on their electricity bills. The initiative serves as a strategic move to mitigate the rising cost of living and stabilize essential utility expenses for domestic users during the designated period.
