BMW Expands i3 Lineup with More Accessible 40 xDrive Electric Variant
BMW has officially broadened its electric sedan portfolio with the introduction of the 2026 i3 40 xDrive. Positioned as a more affordable alternative to the high-performance 50 xDrive, this new variant aims to capture a wider segment of the premium EV market.
The 40 xDrive variant utilizes an 82.8 kWh battery pack to achieve an impressive WLTP-rated range of up to 710 km on a single charge. While it offers a more moderate power output of 374 PS compared to its high-spec sibling, it retains the sophisticated dual-motor all-wheel-drive system characteristic of the xDrive lineup. Furthermore, the model supports ultra-fast DC charging at up to 300 kW, ensuring minimal downtime during long-distance journeys.
This new electric offering arrives in tandem with the launch of the eighth-generation petrol-powered 3 Series, highlighting BMW's strategic multi-powertrain approach. By providing a more price-sensitive entry point into the all-electric i3 range, the brand is better positioned to compete aggressively against established rivals in the premium electric sedan space. This expansion underscores BMW's commitment to offering diverse performance and efficiency configurations to meet evolving consumer demands.
